USA, Washington, Malaga: Chelan County Power Utility District (PUD) is building an $86 M substation to power the Microsoft data centre campus in Malaga, USA.

Microsoft and the PUD entered into an interconnection agreement for the PUD to supply the infrastructure needed for the campus.

PUD Project Manager Casey Hall says they have 13 contracts in place to gather all the required materials.

“From transformers to circuit breakers to steel structures for the transmission lines, steel in the yard, the control buildings, all the different parts and pieces that go into a switch yard to make it operational,” said Casey.

The substation will require seven transformers, which will take around one and a half years to arrive from the manufacturer. Due to the project’s scale and timeframe, the PUD has hired a third-party contractor to assist in the acquisition of all necessary components.

The Jumpoff Ridge Switchyard will be the official name of the substation, having its name derived from a local rock feature.

Site grading and a retaining wall ($1.4 M cost) in the vicinity of the planned switchyard are expected to commence in the spring of 2023 and continue for around six months.

The three-data-centre campus, as well as the related utility infrastructure, will be built in stages. Construction of the Jumpoff Ridge Switchyard is expected to begin in the summer of 2023 and last approximately 40 months.
