Australia, New South Wales: A new 210 t custom-made transformer has arrived at Origin Energy’s Eraring Power Station. The company has reached a milestone in the construction of its large-scale battery at the station. The transformer is a key piece of the puzzle in the project, and at approximately 9 m long and 3 m wide, is rated at 285 MVA.

The transportation of the transformer was a significant logistical feat, covering nearly 60 km from Mayfield Port to the station. This was accomplished using two block trucks towing a 16-axle platform trailer, with an additional push truck at the rear for added support. Once at the site, cranes unloaded the transformer into its position within the battery’s substation. A second identical unit is scheduled to arrive by the end of the month.

Stage one of the battery project at Eraring is more than halfway complete. It will use the two transformers to connect to the National Electricity Grid Market and involves the construction of a 460 MW battery storage system with a dispatch duration of two hours. Along with the transformers, the BESS will include 840 battery enclosures and 140 inverters to manage the charging and discharging processes. The $600 million battery should come online towards the end of 2025.
