Both the 33 kV substations at GT Road and Hoshiarpur Road in Phagwara city as well as 33 kV substations were upgraded to 66 kV substations at the same time. The entire network of 33kV transmission lines in the urban area has also become 66kV.
The Corporation’s Chief Engineer Transmission Systems Rajinder Singh Sarao said that with the voltage level of 33 to 66 kV in the communication network and substations, the transmission losses would be reduced by 75 %.
A 33 KV power transformer of 12.5 MVA was replaced at Chahedu Sub Station and a 66 KV transformer of 20 MVA was installed. The new 66 kV line has been commissioned by laying underground cable in some parts at the cost of $1.4 M (Rs. 10 crore). Sarao said that in the next few days a 20 MVA transformer would be installed at both the sub stations at GT Road and Hoshiarpur Road instead of 12.5 MVA. With the increase in power demand in the coming summer season, there is no doubt that these substations will be overloaded. The corporation has incurred a cost of about $690,000 (Rs. 5 crore) for upgrading the substations and increasing their capacity. Punjab State Power Corporation Ltd. Chairman Venu Prasad lauded and congratulated all the teams for smooth and efficient handling of the work of upgradation of substations and lines in the shortest possible time.
