Nigeria: The nation’s hydropower plants have seen their output levels tumble in the past few days, causing total power generation to drop below 4,000 MVA.
Electricity generation from Kainji, Jebba and Shiroro hydropower stations fell to 534 MW as of 6 a.m. on 20 April from 980 MW on April 16, data from the Nigerian Electricity System Operator showed.
Kainji, Jebba and Shiroro generated 345 MW, 294 MW and 341 MW as of 6 a.m. on 16 April, accounting for 22.85 % of total national generation.
The nation generates most of its electricity from gas-fired power plants, while output from hydropower plants makes up about 30 % of the total generation.
Total power generation in the country fell to 3,757.9 MW as of 6 a.m. on 20 April from 4,287.7 MW on 16 April, according to the system operator.
Six of the nation’s 27 power plants, including three built under the National Integrated Power Project, were not generating any MW of electricity on 20 April.
The affected plants were Sapele, Ihovbor, Gbarain, Ibom Power, AES, and ASCO.
