USA, Washington: Washington state utility Puget Sound Energy (PSE) said it plans to build a 248 MW wind farm in Montana’s Stillwater County.

The utility is expecting the wind farm to deliver electricity to around 83,000 homes annually. The Beaver Creek wind farm will be installed as part of PSE’s efforts to comply with Washington state’s clean energy regulations that require all utilities to supply their customers in the state with power from 100% clean, renewable and non-emitting resources by 2045.

The wind park will be located in high plain areas and will interconnect on NorthWestern Energy’s system and will use existing PSE transmission facilities. The turbines will be initially located in Stillwater County only, but there is an option to install additional machines in the neighboring Sweet Grass County and a lithium-ion battery energy storage system.

The project should benefit from its location and high production rate due to the favourable wind conditions in Montana. The plant’s generation is expected to mitigate the typically lower output of Washington wind farms during extremely cold weather periods in the Pacific Northwest. Construction works are slated to begin next spring and commercial operations are expected to be launched in 2025.

“PSE is undergoing one of the largest clean energy transformations of any utility in the country,” said Mary Kipp, president and CEO of PSE.
