Reconstruction of Nantianping substation completed

China, Ningxiang: The reconstruction project of 35 kV Nantianping Transformer Substation in Ningxiang City was successfully put into operation on 29 November.

Nantianping substation was commissioned in 1993. After the reconstruction, the substation operates with two 35 kV power transformers with capacity of 10 and 6.3 MVA respectively. Most of the substation equipment has been operating over 20 years, so naturally it is in a rather poor condition.

Due to the impact of weather conditions, the old outdoor equipment such as the 35 kV circuit breaker and 10 kV column breaker, have had frequent faults and the spare parts of protection devices have been discontinued.

Over fifty equipment failures have occurred in the substation in the past five years, which has seriously affected the safe and stable operation of power grid and the power supply reliability in the town of Nantianping and surrounding areas.

The reconstruction project of Nantianping substation included the implementation of load transition by adding interconnection switches of distribution network lines, making a full use of the relatively low-load period in autumn through a power outage. This has reduced the safety risk of onsite construction and shortened the construction time of the power outage.

Nantianping substation is the first 35 kV transformer substation in Hunan Province to adopt the mode of “35 kV HGIS and 10 kV prefabricated cabin and secondary prefabricated cabin”. With more indoor devices, the operation environment is greatly improved. Highly integrated equipment also reduces the floor area.

HGIS (hybrid gas-insulated switchgear) has been adopted to reduce the maintenance costs, and a prefabricated cabin instead of the original 10 kW outdoor pole-type disconnector greatly improves the power supply reliability of distribution network.
