Sri Lanka, Colombo: If the water levels continue to rise around the Matara substation, the power will be disconnected from it.

Minister of Power and Energy Kanchana Wijesekera said the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) informed that if the water levels continue to rise in the area around the Matara grid substation, as a safety precaution the power will be disconnected from the substation.

Posting on X, formerly known as Twitter, the Minister said power to the affected areas in Matara will be reconnected shortly after from the Deniyaya and Beliatta substations. The Minister added that Navy boats and personnel have been put on standby to evacuate CEB personnel from the Matara Grid substation after the completion of the shutdown.

The southern parts of Sri Lanka, especially the Galle and Matara districts, are battered by the prevailing active southwest monsoon conditions, which has brought heavy rains to many parts of the island over the past few weeks.
