USA, North Carolina, Nags Head: On Sunday evening, 2 August, there was an equipment failure which caused a fire at an electrical substation in Nags Head.

Jeremey Slaton, Dominion Energy, said that more that 8,000 customers lost power due to the incident.

Randy Wells, fire chief with the town of Nags Head, stated that a transformer inside the substation yard was on fire when crews arrived on scene. They had to wait until Dominion deenergised the station and shut down power to start putting out the flames.

“The danger there was with the energised fire equipment,” Wells explained. Unlike structure fires, electrical fires must be contained with dry chemical extinguishers and water with foam, only after the energy running into the equipment has been terminated.

The fire call came into Nags Head Fire Department on 2 August at 7:16 p.m. and it was not until 5:05 a.m. on 3 August that all customers had their power restored.
