USA, New York: Construction has started on Ørsted’s 924 MW Sunrise Wind offshore wind project off the coast of New York. The project will be the largest turbine complex in the state. It will be located within a federal lease area some 30 miles (48.2 km) east of Montauk, NY, and should go online in 2026, according to New York Governor Kathy Hochul.

This is the state’s first utility-scale offshore wind farm. It will be capable of powering around 600000 homes annually, having an approved transmission route connected to NY’s grid at the Holbrook Substation in the Town of Brookhaven in Suffolk County.

Developed by Ørsted, it was previously jointly owned by the company and New England utility Eversource Energy. Ørsted became the sole owner earlier this month. The project finalised its 25-year offshore wind renewable energy certificate (OREC) contract with the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) in June.
