India, Hyderabad: Toshiba Transmission & Distribution Systems (India) Pvt Ltd is planning to expand its transformer manufacturing capacity. The company announced it would increase manufacturing capacity by roughly 1.5 times from its level as of end of FY 2023-24, over a three-year period starting from the current FY, 2024-25. Toshiba Group has positioned its power T&D business as a focus business and will invest approximately JPY 10 billion ($63.5 million) in TTDI to expand its capacity.

Hiroshi Furuta, Chairperson & Managing Director, TTDI commented: “Toshiba is a world leader in the supply of T&D equipment for both conventional and renewable energy sources. With India established as a hub for our T&D equipment manufacturing operations and export base, TTDI has successfully supplied India-made transformers to over 50 countries. Furthering our commitment to Make-in-India and Export-from-India, the new investment will improve operational efficiency, increase speed-to-market, and support in expanding our business in India and overseas.”

This investment will help TTDI increase its assembly and test line capacity for distribution transformers and power transformers for the transmission grids and distribution networks. The enhanced testing capacity for transformers will be geared towards expanding transformer exports and meeting the high demand for 400 kV and 765 kV transformers in the Indian market. Distribution transformer capacity expansion is aimed at creating a dedicated facility for CRGO (cold rolled grain-oriented) steel processing centre in order to enhance the vertical integration facility which can help to reduce the process lead time, enhancement of Quality, Safety and 5S. TTDI also plans to build a new manufacturing facility for surge arresters during the first half of the current FY and the products will be commercially available in the market by the second half of the year.
