    WiPE Interviews in partnership with CWIEME BERLIN: Interview with Mazana Armstrong (IEEE Power and Energy Society Secretary)

We have joined for this excellent initiative to advance women in engineering, and highlight those female colleagues making a significant impact in our industry in order to empower all women working in our field.

     

    Our special guest in this interview is Mazana Armstrong, IEEE Power and Energy Society Secretary.

     

    This programme is designed to support women in our industry through scholarships for education at the Transformers Academy. So, in this series of live sessions, we will be interviewing some prominent women online at the academy. CWIEME will provide scholarships to the academy for a certain number of women! This initiative is the core value of our project, and we are enthusiastic about making a positive impact together.

    Mazana will delve into her remarkable journey, shedding light on her pivotal role within BC Hydro and the IEEE Power and Energy Society. She will explore various aspects of her career, from her early days navigating high-voltage equipment to her current position as a division manager for transmission stations engineering.

     

    Throughout her nearly 18-year tenure with BC Hydro, Mazana has been instrumental in tackling challenges ranging from transmission line design to managing substations. Her insights into the industry’s evolution and BC Hydro’s position as a leading Canadian utility promise to be both enlightening and engaging.

     

    Key topics to be addressed include the unprecedented challenge of electrification, the impact of transformer shortages and supply chain issues, and the soaring demand for equipment in today’s landscape.     About our guest

    Mazana Armstrong

    IEEE Power and Energy Society Secretary

    Mazana Armstrong is the Manager of Transmission Stations Engineering Division at BC Hydro. She has over 25 years of professional experience in operations, maintenance, and design of high voltage electric power systems, specifically electrical aspects of 69 kV to 500 kV transmission systems. Mazana’s professional contributions include standards development addressing electrical safety of the public, power utility workers and facilities in close proximity of electric power systems.

     

    Mazana holds a degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Zagreb, Croatia, and a M.A.Sc. and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of British Columbia, Canada. She is a registered Professional Engineer in British Columbia, and a Senior Member of IEEE. Mazana has been an IEEE Power and Energy Society volunteer for over 20 years in various roles. She started her role as IEEE Power and Energy Society Secretary in January 2024. Mazana is an IEEE Power and Energy Society Distinguished Lecturer and a Member of IEEE Standards Association.
